To make navigation easier on a smart phone when clicking small buttons can be fiddly I have added a "map" to the main picture so navigation can be done by touching (or clicking the mouse on) 4 different areas of the map. Imagine the picture cut by two diagonal lines - left takes you back a picture, right goes to the next one, top takes you back up to the gallery and bottom open the full size picture.
